【結成からメジャーになるまでの足取り】
　1985年9月にボストンのバークリー大学で音楽理論を学んでいたギタリストのJohn Petrucci、ベーシストのJohn Myung、ドラマーのMike Portnoyの3人が母体となってバンドを結成します。
　1985年12月にトリオによる編成で音楽活動が始まり、拠点をロング・アイランドに移し、PetrucciとMyungの高校時代の友人でKevin Mooreと接触し、キーボードを担当することになり、4人編成となります。実はMooreもフレドニアの大学で音楽理論を学んでいた様です。
　1986年3月にChris Colinsが参加し、更に5人編成となります。そしてバンド名を「MAJESTY」と命名し、ローカルバンドとしてクラブ回りをし、自費出版でアルバムをリリースします。
　1986年11月にChris Colinsに対しボーカルの技量が足りないことを理由に解雇。そして100人に及ぶボーカル・オーディションを行います。
　1987年秋にCharlie Dominiciがボーカリストの座を獲得。
　1988年にデモ・テープを製作。そしてレコード会社と契約を結びます。
　デビュー直前に「MAJESTY」という同名のジャズ・バンドが既に存在していることがわかり、Portnoyの父親の提案で、モントレーの映画館の名前をヒントに「DREAM THEATER」をバンド名に変更することに決まります。
　1989年にオフィシャル・デビューアルバム「When Dream And Day Unite」をリリース。
　彼らは、バークレイ大学で音楽理論を学んだ経験を生かし、より高度な技術を持った演奏の持ち主で、DEEP PURPLEやLED ZEPPELIN、PINK FLOYD、IRON MAIDEN、METALLICA等のカバーをこなしてしまうほどのプログレッシブなヘヴィーメタル・バンドなのです。
